Shrinebuilder is a new underground metal supergroup of sorts that has a blog called We Burn Through the Night that’s updated by Neurosis guitarist Scott Kelly. These updates make me believe he’s a man whose intensity places himself constantly on the brink of a psychotic breakdown. The line-up:
Guitar: Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus/Obsessed/Spirit Caravan/Hidden Hand)
Guitar: Scott Kelly (Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot)
Bass: Al Cisneros (Sleep/Om)
Drums: Dale Crover (Melvins)
A few months ago I walked into work at 9AM to hear a motorized drone and thinking it was just some construction outside, joked to my co-worker, “I really hope that rumbling noise isn’t one of the PCs.” He looked confusingly in my direction and after a slight delay I recognized the slightest hint of melody in the aural sensation making me change my perspective to the follow-up with, “Oh, that’s music. Sweet.” He was listening to Sleep’s Dopesmoker which has a storied history that blocked its release. If you dig Black Sabbath and the obscene amounts of low-end abuse involved, you should definitely get on top of them.
Now these four cats getting together to bang out an album within a week span creates one of the first music projects of 2009 that I’m greatly anticipating. Isis’ new album Wavering Point comes out May 5 too.
