He’s Going for That Anti-Marketing Dollar

Ignorance is Strength

That’s a good market. One (and only one) of my eyebrows were raised by Facebook Connect’s implementation policies, specifically two clauses:

2. When Facebook Connect is used to allow a user to “sign in” or authenticate with your website, the Facebook Connect option must be presented at least as prominently as the most prominent of any other sign in or authentication method on your site, and not as a secondary option.

4. When a user has connected their account and is currently logged in on your site, the application must show the profile picture and name of the user in a visible place on the page. This profile picture should be no smaller than 16×16 pixels and should include the Facebook “f” favicon in the lower right corner. If the profile picture is too small to position the icon over the lower right corner, you can position the favicon to the right of the picture.

To use our service, you must advertise us and not OpenSocial. I’m looking into this since we’re adding Facebook Connect capabilities to an in-development project at work. For site registration, we allow you to import details from your Facebook profile (although your website URLs aren’t available using the API and I don’t know what’s up with that.) However, we’re not always pulling profile images and info on each page refresh or setting up some sort of automated caching system since this makes your site completely dependent on Facebook. I believe we will offer an option to manually sync your profile and its large-scale picture over, but anything extra is needlessly binding yourself to a corporation’s interface. Autonomy, bitches!

The superimposed ‘f’ next to ‘ingsoc’ made me think ‘fucking soc’. See also: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cBkIqocn-JY

I made a big brother comparison the other day. Do you think we need an orwellian equivalent of Godwin’s law?

On the latter, according to Simon, yes. Although my comparison was more of a loose joke about control of the little man. I’m really doubting any sort of enforcement by Facebook since that will involve labour and moneys.

Now that I got around to the former, I have to say you Brits really have to work on your offensive humour. Edits involving “fuck” are only funny when they involve the Holocaust.
